I love
the wilderness, but I generally dislike photography of wilderness. Such images often embrace a Disneyesque phantasy of self-deception
eluding nature’s/life’s often harsh realities. This poses certain difficulties when choosing to encapsulate an
experience of natural beauty. My own need as an artist is to push boundaries, in
order to maintain personal integrity and have a valid expression.
With a need
to experience beauty, I also carry with me the knowledge that we live in a
delicate and threatened environment. These
works hold something of an apprehension. In making photographs I have to work
quickly to secure an image.
When
using infrared film I can’t previsualize very much, it’s something of a
guess, holding a surprise. With the computer l can create more of a heightened
realism. Paradoxically, the images are nostalgic and apprehensive holding a
symbolic beauty and a metaphorical escapism.
